National Bank Open 2025 Finals Preview: Shelton vs. Khachanov; Osaka vs. Mboko
Thursday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results and Previews from Toronto and Montreal
Thursday’s schedule at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada will feature the men’s final between No. 4 seed Ben Shelton and No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov.
With both men causing upsets on Wednesday, Shelton defeated No. 2 seed Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3, and Khachanov picked up his first win over top seed Alexander Zverev in six years, dismissing the German 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4).
Shelton will be contesting his first-career Masters 1000 final, and Khachanov will be aiming to win his second title in this class of event. The Russian captured the Paris Masters in 2018.
Shelton leads Khachanov 1-0 in career matches. The American won their lone meeting earlier this year at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
Shelton reached the final by defeating Alex de Minaur and Flavio Cobolli earlier in the event. Khachanov reached the finals by also dismissing No. 8 seed Casper Ruud and No. 26 seed Alex Michelsen from the United States.
Women’s Final Preview: Osaka vs. Mboko in Montreal
Thursday’s final in Montreal will feature four-time Major winner Naomi Osaka going up against Canadian star Victoria Mboko.
Defeating No. 16 seed Clara Tauson 6-2, 7-6(7) in the semifinals, Osaka is now up to No. 24 in the world. She will aim for her eighth career title on Thursday against Mboko.
Mboko, who has put together the tournament of her career to date, defeated Elena Rybakina in a third set tiebreaker on Wednesday evening. Mboko has now defeated three Major winners in this event: Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin and Rybakina.
The 18-year-old, who entered the event ranked No. 85 on the computer, will move up to at least No. 34 in the world when the latest rankings are released.
Displaying a powerful blend of great groundstrokes and serving, Mboko has shown that her poise and maturity will take her to the top of the sport in no time.
