Cina Advances to 2025 Madrid Open Second Round; Kvitova Ousted
Wednesday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results from Madrid
Wednesday’s action at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain, featured Italian upstart Federico Cina reached the second round, defeating Coleman Wong from Hong Kong 7-6(5), 6-1.
Needing one hour and 19 minutes to advance, Cina hit one ace, won 76 percent of his first serve points, and broke serve on two occasions. Adding 19 winners to victory, Cina will next No. 23 Sebastian Korda for a place in round 32.
Other winners on the day included Christopher O’Connell, Arthur Rinderknech and Marino Navone.
Navone will next face No. 12 seed Ben Shelton. Shelton recently made the finals of the BMW Open in Munich, Germany.
Matches that are still to come on Wednesday will feature Gael Monfils, Marin Cilic and Alexander Bublik.
Three-time Winner Kvitova Ousted
On the women’s side, Belinda Bencic, Diane Parry, Ann Li, Anastasija Sevastova, Maya Joint, and Katie Volynets.
Volynets ousted three-time former winner Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-0. Volynets hit one ace, broke serve on seven occasions and won 55 percent of her first serve points.
Kvitova fell to 0-4 on the season. The 35-year-old returned to the WTA this year after giving birth to her first child last year.
Thursday’s action in Madrid will feature men’s first round action and women’s second round matches.
