Fils Advances in Rotterdam Opener; Rybakina Wins in Abu Dhabi
Wednesday’s Results from the ATP Tour and WTA
No. 7 seed Arthur Fils needed three sets to advance to the second round of the ABN AMRO Open in the Netherlands on Wednesday, defeating Constant Lestienne 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1.
In a match that lasted two hours and eight minutes, Fils struck 14 aces, won 73 percent of his first serve points and broke his countryman on six occasions.
Fils, who is currently ranked No. 19 in the world, will next face lucky loser Daniel Altmaier for a place in the quarterfinals.
Altmaier ousted Montpellier finalist Aleksandar Kovacevic 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Other matches that are still on deck on Wednesday will see No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev, No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Matteo Berrettini in action.
Thursday’s schedule will feature the return of top seed Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard will face either Auger-Aliassime or Andrea Vavassori.

Top seed Elena Rybakina reached the second-round of the Abu Dhabi Open in the U.A.E. on Wednesday, defeating Katie Volynets 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The No. 1 seed hit seven aces, won 69 percent of her first serve points and broke her American opponent on four occasions.
Rybakina will next face either Ons Jabeur or Wakana Sonobe from Japan.
Other winners on the day included No. 4 seed Yulia Putintseva, No. 8 seed Leylah Fernandez and Swiss Star Belinda Bencic.
Bencic recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Veronika Kudermetova.
Thursday’s action in Abu Dhabi will feature Rybakina, Fernandez and Bencic vs. Marketa Vondrousova.

Transylvania Open—Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Wednesday’s schedule in Cluj-Napoca in Romania saw No. 5 seed Katerina Siniakova need nearly three hours to oust Francesca Jones from Great Britain 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4.
Siniakova, who won the mixed Gold Medal at the Paris Olympics last Summer with partner Tomas MacHac, hit four aces, won 65 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on seven occasions.
The 28-year-old will next face Caroline Dolehide for a place in the quarterfinals. Dolehide defeated Daria Snigur 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s action in Romania also featured the end of Simona Halep‘s career. The 33-year-old retired from the game after losing her first-round match to Lucia Bronzetti, 6-1, 6-1.
Matches that are still to come on Wednesday will feature No. 2 seed Olga Danilovic, and No. 8 seed Jaqueline Cristian.
