Simona Halep Retires from Tennis

The Former World No. 1 and Two-Time Major Winner Retires

Former world No. 1 and fan-favourite Simona Halep retired from professional tennis on Tuesday at her home event at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, losing in straight sets to world No. 72 Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-1.

After the 59 minute encounter, the 33-year-old, who is currently ranked No. 870 in the world, addressed her fans on court.

Halep leaves the game with 24 career titles, over 40 million won in prize money alone, and an impressive 580/243 win/loss record. The Romanian will turn 34 in September.

Grand Slam Titles:

  • 2018 French Open – Won her first Grand Slam, defeating Sloane Stephens in the final.
  • 2019 Wimbledon – Defeated Serena Williams in the final to claim her second Grand Slam title.

Other Grand Slam Finals:

  • 2014 French Open – Runner-up to Maria Sharapova.
  • 2017 French Open – Runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko.
  • 2018 Australian Open – Runner-up to Caroline Wozniacki.

WTA Rankings:

  • World No. 1 – First achieved in October 2017, holding the top spot for 64 weeks in total.
  • Finished year-end No. 1 in 2017 and 2018.

Significant WTA Titles:

  • WTA Finals Champion (2014, runner-up) – Lost to Serena Williams in the final.
  • 24 WTA Titles, including prestigious events like:
    • Indian Wells (2015)
    • Madrid Open (2016, 2017)
    • Canadian Open (2016, 2018)
    • Italian Open (2020)

Olympics & Fed Cup:

  • Competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but withdrew due to injury.
  • Represented Romania in the Billie Jean King Cup (Fed Cup).

Other Career Highlights:

  • Longest consecutive streak in the WTA Top 10 (2014–2021) for 373 weeks.
  • Became one of the most consistent players of her generation, known for her speed, defense, and intelligent shot selection.
