No. 5 seed Alexander Zverev completed a stellar week of tennis at the Madrid Open on Sunday, dismissing No. 8 seed Matteo Berrettini 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3. Winning his second career Madrid Open title, Zverev overcame the loss of the first set to prevail in two hours and 41 minutes.
Striking five aces and winning 76 percent of his first serve points, the German broke his Italian opponent on four of eight occasions.
Improving to 3-1 against Berrettini in lifetime meetings, Zverev also collected his 15th career title.
Defeating Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem earlier in the event, Zverev will remain at No. 6 in the world when Monday’s rankings are released.
Berrettini, who was looking to win his second title of the season and fifth overall, dismissed Casper Ruud and Cristian Garin earlier in the tournament.
The 25-year-old will improve his ranking to No. 9 in the world on Monday.
