No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev won his third Masters 1000 title on Sunday in Madrid, Spain, defeating No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-4. In a match that lasted one hour and 18 minutes, Zverev won 83 percent of his first serve points, 68 percent of his second serve points and broke serve once in each set. Controlling the tempo of the match with his cross-court backhand, the young German won his second title in as many weeks after taking home the BMW Open in Munich last Sunday. The 21-year-old improved to 2-4 against Thiem in lifetime meetings, 27/7 on the year and is a sure NetBet Sport for the future.
Thiem, who had defeated world No. 1 Rafael Nadal earlier in the week, struggled to win points on his own serve as well as on his opponent’s serve. The 24-year-old won only 12 total points against Zverev’s serve throughout the encounter. The result will remain bitterly disappointing for Thiem as he has never won a Masters 1000 title.
Both Zverev and Thiem will next see action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy beginning on Monday.
