Zverev, Alcaraz, Djokovic and Sabalenka Reach Third Round of 2025 Australian Open
Wednesday’s action at the 2025 Australian Open featured No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 7 seed Novak Djokovic all reach the third round of the event.
First up, Alcaraz needed three quick-fire sets to blow past Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. The Spaniard poured in 14 aces, won 89 percent of his first serve point and broke his Japanese opponent on six occasions.
The No. 3 seed will next face Nuno Borges of Portugal, who upset No. 27 seed and home-country favourite Jordan Thompson 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
Next up, Djokovic needed four sets to move into the next round, defeating 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2. The 10-time former winner also moved past Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam matches ever played at 430.
The Serbian legend will next face No. 26 seed and inform Czech Tomas Machac for a place in found four.
MacHac dismissed Reilly Opelka 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-4 in three hours and 25 minutes.
Second seed Zverev had a much easier time in reaching the round of 32, dismissing Pedro Martinez 6-1, 6-4, 6-1. The German, who has never won a Major, hit eight aces, won 79 percent of his first serve points and broke his Spanish opponent on six occasions.
Other men’s winners on the day included: No. 12 seed Tommy Paul, No. 14 seed Ugo Humbert, No. 15 seed Jack Draper, No. 20 seed Arthur Fils, and No. 24 seed Jiri Lehecka.
No. 6 seed Casper Ruud and No. 22 seed Sebastian Korda were both eliminated from the competition. Ruud lost in four sets to promising Czech player Jakub Mensik, and Korda dropped a five set encounter to Aleksandar Vukic.
Thursday’s schedule will feature top seed Jannik Sinner, No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev.
Sabalenka Still in Line for Three Peat
Top seed and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka raced into the third-round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, defeating Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3, 7-5.
Needing one hour and 34 minutes to prevail, the Belorussian hit two aces, won 61 percent of her first serve points and broke her opponent on five occasions.
In her road to a three-peat, Sabalenka will next face recent Auckland winner Clara Tauson. Tauson dispatched Tatjana Maria from Germany 6-2, 6-2.
Other results on the day saw last year’s finalist Qinwen Zheng crash out of the event, losing to veteran German Laura Siegemund 7-6(3), 6-3. The loss will drop Zheng two spots in the rankings to No. 7.
Siegemund will next face No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Russian defeated country-woman Anastasia Potapova 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-2.
Other results on the day saw No. 3 seed Coco Gauff, No. 7 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 11 seed Paula Badosa, No. 12 seed Diana Shnaider, No. 14 seed Mirra Andreeva, No. 17 seed Marta Kostyuk, No. 23 seed Magdalena Frech and No. 30 seed Leylah Fernandez all reach the third round.
Two-time former winner Naomi Osaka defeated No. 20 seed Karolina Muchova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. It’s the first time Osaka has made the third-round of the event since 2022. Osaka will next face Belinda Bencic for a place in round four. Bencic dismissed Suzan Lamens 6-1, 7-6(3).
On Thursday, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini and No. 8 seed Emma Navvaro will be in action.
