No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas set up a blockbuster third round showdown with Australian Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon on Thursday. Dispatching Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, Tsitsipas will next face the most dangerous unseeded man in the field in Kyrgios. Kyrgios dismantled No. 26 seed Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. The Australian recently defeated Tsitsipas at the Halle event in Germany.
Reigning Australian Open and French Open champion Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round after Ricardas Berankis 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Nadal, who hit 13 aces throughout the encounter, will next face No. 27 seed Lorenzo Sonego.
Elsewhere, No. 11 seed Taylor Fritz reached the third round with a straight set victory against Alastair Gray, while No. 21 seed Botic van de Zandschulp defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.
On the women’s side, former US Open winner Bianca Andresscu was ousted by Elena Rybakina 6-4, 7-6(5), while Katie Boulter defeated No. 6 seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. Women’s top seed Iga Swiatek was made to work but advanced to the third round with a Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Swiatek has now won 37 matches in a row.
No. 4 seed Paula Badosa set up an enticing third-round encounter with Petra Kvitova, while No. 8 see Jessica Pegula and former French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova also advanced.
Friday’s action at Wimbledon will feature Novak Djokovic, Ons Jabeur and Carlos Alcaraz.
