Tiafoe, Keys, Dimitrov and Badosa Reach US Open Third Round
Wednesday’s schedule of play at the 2024 US Open featured former finalist Madison Keys advance to the third round, defeating Australia’s Maya Joint 6-4, 6-0.
Using her hard-hit groundstrokes to great effect, Keys produced 19 winners, won 63 percent of her first serve points and broke the serve of her opponent on four occasions.
Looking to finally take the leap and become a Grand Slam winner, Keys will next face No. 33 seed Elise Mertens for a place in the final 16.
Mertens took the place of No. 33 seed after Ons Jabuer was forced to withdraw from the event after the draw was made.
Mertens ousted Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-2.
Elsewhere, in a battle of two inform players, No. 26 seed Paula Badosa raced into the third round after upending American Taylor Townsend, 6-3, 7-5.
Badosa, who won the event in Washington, D.C. earlier this summer, hit 16 winners against her left-handed opponent. The Spaniard will next face Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania.
Ruse eliminated No. 8 seed and Wimbledon winner Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 7-5.
Other results on the day included No. 7 seed Qinwen Zheng, Jule Niemeier and Yafan Wang reaching the third round.
Still to come on Wednesday, No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 3 seed Coco Gauff will be in action.

Tiafoe Stays the Course
Former semifinalist Frances Tiafoe took one step closer to claiming his first Major on Wednesday in New York, defeating Alexander Shevchenko from Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-1, 1-0 retire.
In an entertaining baseline affair on Ashe Stadium, Tiafoe created many break point opportunities with his stellar footwork. Breaking serve on five occasions, Tiafoe hit 23 winners and five aces before his opponent was forced to retire.
The American will next face his good friend No. 13 seed Ben Shelton or Tour veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in the round of 32.
Other men’s winners on the day included No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev, No. 9 seed Grigor Dimitrov, No. 32 seed Jiri Lehecka, Brandon Nakashima, Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Tallon Griekspoor.
Etcheverry ousted No. 29 seed Francisco Cerundolo in five sets and Griekspoor advanced when No. 21 seed Sebastian Baez retired trailing 6-1, 2-0.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic, No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev and No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz will be highlighted later in the day.
Fritz has a particularly difficult test as he faces former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini from Italy. Berrettini has won three Tour events this season.
