Former US Open winner Dominic Thiem reached the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday in Spain, defeating Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-1.
Once ranked No. 3 in the world, Thiem will next face inform Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in second round action.
Elsewhere, former world No. 1 Andy Murray was ousted by Andrea Vavassori 6-2, 7-6(7). Murray, who has never really preferred playing on clay courts, will next see action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy.
Other results on the day included Jan-Lennard Struff, Cristian Garin and Tomas Martin Etcheverry all advancing.
Friday’s action in Madrid will feature Iga Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz and Andrey Rublev all in action.
