Tabilo Upsets Djokovic at 2024 Italian Open
Sunday’s action at the Italian Open in Rome, Italy featured world No. 29 Alejandro Tabilo causing the biggest upset of the event this year, defeating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-3.
Needing 67 minutest to advance, Tabilo dropped four aces, won 77 percent of his first serve points, hit 22 winners and broke serve on four occasions.
The 26-year-old will next face No. 16 seed Karen Khachanov for a place in the quarterfinals. Khachanov ousted No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo earlier in the day.
Other men’s winners on the day included No. 8 seed Grigor Dimitrov, Nuno Borges and Thiago Monteiro.
Sabalenka, Sakkari Advance
On the women’s side, No. 2 seed and reigning Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the final 16, dispatching No. 32 seed Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-2.
After a difficult first-round encounter against Katie Volynets, the recent Madrid Open finalist will next face either No. 16 seed Elina Svitolina or No. 23 seed Anna Kalinskaya for a quarterfinal birth.
Other winners on the women’s side on Sunday included No. 5 seed Maria Sakkari, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Rebecca Sramkova.
Monday’s action in Rome will be highlighted by top seed Iga Swiatek and No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev.
