Tuesday’s action at Wimbledon saw women’s top seed Iga Swiatek win her 36th straight match after she disposed of Jana Fett 6-0, 6-3. The recent French Open winner will next face Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in round two.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Paula Badosa, No. 11 seed Coco Gauff, No. 16 seed Simona Halep, No. 20 seed Amanda Anisamova and No. 25 seed Petra Kvitova also advanced. No. 18 seed Jil Teichmann lost in straight sets to Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-3.
The night cap saw 23-time Major winner Serena Williams bow out to unheralded French woman Harmony Tan, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(7). It was the American’s first match since playing at Wimbledon last year.
On the men’s side, two-time former winner Rafael Nadal defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Spaniard, who has won the first two Majors in 2022, will next face Ricardas Berankis for a place in the third round. Nadal hit five aces, won 70 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on six occasions during the three hour and 33 minute encounter.
In our matches, No. 18 seed Grigor Dimitrov was forced to withdraw against Steve Johnson with a groin injury. No. 24 seed Holger Rune lost to Marcos Giron in three sets, while fan-favourite Nick Kyrgios outlasted Paul Jubb in five sets. No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, the recent winner in Mallorca, overcame Alexander Ritschard in four sets. No. 6 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime lost a heart breaker to American Maxime Cressy 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(9), 7-6(5).
Wednesday’s action at Wimbledon will feature Novak Djokoivc, Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray.
