Sonego, Goffin Reach Winston-Salem Semifinals
Thursday’s action from the ATP Tour featured quarterfinal day at the Winston-Salem Open.
First up, No. 10 seed Lorenzo Sonego defeated No. 15 seed Pavel Kotov 6-3, 7-5.
Using his energetic game to great effect, Sonego produced 25 winners, hit six aces and broke the serve of his Russian opponent on three occasions.
Receiving a walkover in his previous match, Sonego will next face former top 10 player David Goffin for a place in Saturday’s final.
Goffin dismissed No. 16 seed Rinky Hijikata 6-1, 6-3 later in the day.
Other matches that are still to come on Thursday will feature American Learner Tien vs. Pablo Carreno Busta and No. 11 seed Alex Michelsen faces fellow American Christoper Eubanks.
The Winston-Salem Open, held of the campus of Wake Forest University in North Carolina, is the final warm up tournament for next week’s US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Defending champion Sebastian Baez was defeated in the round of 32 by former Cincinnati Open winner Borna Coric.
