Sinner Reaches French Open Semifinals; New World No. 1
Italy’s Jannik Sinner will be the new world No. 1 next Monday when the latest rankings are released after Novak Djokovic’s withdrew from the French Open on Tuesday.
Sinner, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, has been knocking on the door of the top spot all season long.
On Tuesday, Sinner reached the semifinals of the event after dispatching No. 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Needing two hours and 29 minutes to advance, Sinner slammed eight aces, won 81 percent of his first serve points and broke the Bulgarian’s serve on four occasions.
Sinner will next meet either No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz or No. 9 Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Djokovic, who won back-to-back five-setters in the third and fourth rounds, suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee. It is underdetermined how much time Djokovic will need away from the sport to recover.
As a result of Djokovic’s withdrawal, No. 7 seed Casper Ruud has advanced the semifinals. Ruud is a two-time defending finalist at the event.
Swiatek Cruises into Final Four
Top seed and three-time French Open winner Iga Swiatek breezed into the semifinals of the event on Tuesday, defeating No. 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2.
Continuing to prove that she is the undisputed Queen on clay, Swiatek will next face No. 3 seed Coco Gauff for a place in the championship match.
Gauff ousted No. 8 seed Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 earlier in the day.
Swiatek currently leads Gauff 10-1 in their career head-to-head matches.
