Sinner Defeats Shelton; Improves to 3-0 at 2025 ATP Finals
Friday’s results at the ATP Finals final in Turin, Italy saw No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner ease past hard-serving American Ben Shelton, defeating the No. 5 seed 6-3, 7-6(3).
Needing one hour and 34 minutes to advance, Sinner remains undefeated in the Group Stages of the event and will now look forward to the semifinals on Saturday.
Sinner will play No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur in the semifinals. De Minaur has never defeated Sinner in 12 previous meetings.
De Minaur advanced to the semifinals after he dismissed No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz on Thursday.
Even though the Australian finished 1-2 in the Group Stage, he won one more game during the week over Fritz (37-36), which propelled him into the final four.
Other results on Thursday saw top see Carlos Alcaraz clinch the world No. 1 ranking when he dispatched home-country favourite Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-1.
It is the second time in his career (2022) that Alcaraz has finished as the year ranked No. 1.
Alcaraz’s opponent on Saturday will be the winner of tonight’s contest between No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev and Canadian No. 8 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Zverev currently leads Auger-Aliassime 6-3 in career head-to-head meetings. Auger-Aliassime defeated Zverev in their most recent at the US Open in September.
The 25-year-old reached the semifinals of the year’s final Major (losing to Sinner).
