Sinner, Alcaraz, Djokovic and Gauff Reach 2025 Australian Open Second Round
Monday’s action at the Australian Open featured No. 3 seed Coco Gauff overcoming former winner Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3 to win her opening match.
Needing one hour and 20 minutes to prevail, Gauff hit 12 aces, won 77 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on four occasions.
Gauff, who finished 2024 in great form, will next face Jodie Burrage for a place in round three.
Other women’s winners on the day included: No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, No. 7 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 10 seed Danielle Collins, No. 12 seed Diana Shnaider, No. 17 seed Marta Kostyuk, No. 20 seed Karolina Muchova, No. 25 seed Liudmila Samsonova, No. 27 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, No. 28 seed Elina Svitolina and Naomi Osaka.
Osaka, a two-time former winner in Melbourne, played Caroline Garcia for the second year in a row in the first round. Avenging last year’s loss, Osaka prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
No. 16 seed Jelena Ostapenko and No. 21 seed Victoria Azarenka were both ousted on Monday. Ostapenko lost to Belinda Bencic 6-3, 7-6(6), and Azarenka dropped her match to Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 7-6(2).
Tuesday’s action in Melbourne will feature No. 4 seed Jasmine, No. 6 seed Elena Rybakina and No. 8 seed Emma Navarro.
Sinner, Alcaraz, Djokovic Advance
On the men’s side, 10-time former winner Novak Djokovic breezed into round two after he defeated inform American Nishesh Basavareddy 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Djokovic, who is now coached by Andy Murray, poured in 23 aces, won 76 percent of his first serve points and broke his opponent on four occasions. The legendary Serb will next face Jaime Faria in round two.
Faria, 21, defeated Pavel Kotov 6-1, 6-1, 7-5.
Other winners on the Day 2 saw top seed Jannik Sinner, No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz, No. 12 seed Tommy Paul, No. 15 seed Jack Draper, No. 17 seed Frances Tiafoe, No. 22 seed Sebastian Korda and No. 29 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime all advancing to the second-round.
Australian favourite Nick Kyrgios crashed out of the event in straight sets to Jacob Fearnley 7-6(3), 6-3, 7-6(2).
Kyrgios, who played his first Australian Open since 2022, likely participated in what could be his last Australian Open.
Other seeded players that lost on Monday were No. 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov, No. 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 23 seed Alejandro Tabilo and No. 28 seed Sebastian Baez.
Tuesday’s men’s action will be highlighted by No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz and No. 5 seed Daniil Medvedev.
