Canada will face the Republic of Korea at IGA Stadium from February 2-3

[MONTREAL, QC] January 5, 2024 — On Friday, Tennis Canada announced that Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, ON), Gabriel Diallo (Montreal, QC), Alexis Galarneau (Laval, QC), and Vasek Pospisil (Vernon, BC) have been selected to represent Team Canada presented by Sobeys at the Davis Cup Qualifiers in Montreal, Quebec. The Qualifier tie will be played on February 2 and 3 at IGA Stadium, with Canada set to take on the Republic of Korea. The tie will determine which country qualifies for the Group Stage of the Davis Cup Finals in September.

“It’s been a few years since we’ve played in Canada, so we’re very happy to get the chance again to play at home in front of the best fans in the world,” said Team Canada’s captain Frank Dancevic. “We played against the Republic of Korea in Valencia in 2022 and they were tough opponents, but our team is more than up to the task, and they’ll be ready to prove once again why Canada is one of the best tennis nations in the world.”

World No. 109 Shapovalov will be representing Canada at the Davis Cup for the 10th time in his career, and currently boasts a record of 14 wins and nine losses. The 24-year-old from Richmond Hill was ranked as high as No. 18 in 2023, however, he was forced to miss a large portion of the season due to injury. He played his most recent tournament in July at Wimbledon, reaching the round of 16 of the prestigious event.

Diallo, 22, has wasted no time in 2024, already reaching the semi-final of the Workday Canberra International where he was ultimately defeated 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3 to the tournament’s top seed Dominik Koepfer. The Montrealer is ranked No. 139 in the world and will be gearing up to participate in his fifth Davis Cup event. Diallo has won two of his five Davis Cup bouts.

Galarneau, who is ranked No. 202 in the world, will be making his sixth appearance for Team Canada.

During the Group Stage of the 2023 Finals, Galarneau impressively won all five of his matches, helping Canada punch their ticket to the Final 8. The 24-year-old Laval native has a 5-3 record in Davis Cup action.

The team is rounded out by 33-year-old Pospisil. Currently ranked world No. 437, Pospisil continues to demonstrate his ability to rise to the occasion at the Davis Cup, winning six of his seven previous matches at the competition. Pospisil is the second-most winningest Canadian in Davis Cup history (31 wins and 25 losses) and will be representing Canada for the 26th time in his career.
