US Open—Flushing Meadows, New York
Opening day at the US Open saw world No. 1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev cruise into the second round after defeating Stefan Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Needing two hours and one minute to advance, Medvedev will next face Arthur Rinderknech, who ousted countryman Quentin Halys in four sets.
Elsewhere, seeded players Casper Ruud, Matteo Berrettini, and Tommy Paul won their opening round matches on the outer courts.
Former winner Andy Murray reached the second round in impressive fashion after dismissing No. 24 seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Murray will face Emilio Nava in the next round.
J.J. Wolf poured in the biggest upset of the day so far by dispatching No. 16 seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Wolf will contest his next round against Alejandro Tabilo.
Tonights men’s action will be highlighted by Wimbledon Finalist Nick Kyrgios taking on his good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.
On the women’s side, recent Toronto winner Simona Halep was sunned in the opening round be Daria Snigur 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Snigur, who is ranked No. 124 in the world, was emotional after her victory.
Other women’s winners on the day included No. 3 seed Maria Sakkari, No. 12 seed Coco Gauff, former winner Bianca Andresscu and No. 15 seed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Serena Williams extended her farewell to tennis by taking out Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3. The American legend will next face No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s action at Flushing Meadows will feature Rafael Nadal, Venus Williams, Carlos Alcaraz and Naomi Osaka.
