Rolex Monte Carlo Masters—Monaco
Two-time former winner Stefanos Tsitsipas gained a controversial victory on Saturday at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, defeating reigning Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Needing two hours and 41 minutes to advance, Tsitsipas benefitted from a terrible call from the chair umpire at 1-3 down in the third set on a break point. Hitting a double fault that was later seen to be seven center meters out, Sinner returned the long serve, lost the point, and never recovered.
Improving to 6-3 against Sinner in lifetime meetings, Tsitsipas will next face two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud in Sunday’s final.
Ruud Reaches First Masters 1000 Final
Ruud picked up the biggest victory of his career by ousting world No. 1 Novak Djokovic later in the day.
Recording a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 scoreline, Ruud used his much-improved forehand to offset his legendary opponent.
Hitting four aces and winning 64 percent of his first serve points, Ruud broke the serve of the top seed on four occasions.
Never winning a set against Djokovic in five previous meetings, Ruud will take a 2-1 head-t-head lead over Tsitsipas into Sunday’s final.
Ruud has never won a Masters 1000 event, while Tsitsipas owns two titles at the prestigious level and an ATP Finals crown.
