Ruud will next face Holger Rune, who needed four hours to defeat Francisco Cerundolo 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(7).
Later in the day, Alexander Zverev easily dispatched Grigor Dimitrov and Tomas Martin Etcheverry reached his first-career Major quarterfinal over Yoshihito Nishioka.
On the women’s side, No. 6 seed Coco Gauff dismissed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-5, 6-2, No. 7 seed Ons Jabeur breezed past Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-1 and Beatriz Haddad Maia ousted Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-5.
Top seed and defending champion Iga Swiatek needed only six games to reach the quarterfinals against Lesia Tsurenko. The Ukrainian was forced to retire down 1-5 due to illness.
Tuesday’s schedule of play in Paris will feature Carlos Alcaraz, Aryan Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic.
