Ruud Continues to Surge
Two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud continued his stellar clay-court season, defeating Jordan Thompson 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday at the Barcelona Open.
Winning 81 percent of his first serve points, Ruud will look to make the semifinals on Friday when he faces Matteo Arnaldi. The Italian dismissed Marco Trungelliti 6-3, 6-0.
Ruud recently made the finals of the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and the event in Los Cabos, Mexico.
Elsewhere, No. 12 seed Cameron Norrie, No. 13 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Dusan Lajovic also advanced to the quarterfinals. Lajovic ousted No. 11 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets.

BMW OPEN—Munich, Germany
Two-time defending champion Holger Rune advanced to the quarterfinals of the BMW Open on Thursday, dispatching Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4, 6-2.
In a match that lasted one hour and 39 minutes, Rune struck seven aces and broke serve on three occasions.
The Danish star will next face Marc-Andrea Huesler.
Other results on the day saw No. 3 seed Taylor Fritz picking up his first victory on clay this year over Alejandro Moro Canas 6-3, 6-1.

TIRIAC OPEN—Bucharest, Romaina
Up-and-coming Brazilian Joao Fonseca advanced to the quarterfinals of the Tiriac Open on Thursday, dismissing Radu Albot 7-6(2) 6-2.
The 17-year-old will next face No. 4 seed Alejandro Tabilo for a place in the semifinals.
Other results on the day saw Corentin Moutet and Marton Fucsovics reach the final eight as well.
