Friday’s quarterfinal action at the National Bank Open in Toronto saw Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reach his first Masters 1000 semifinal on hard-courts, defeating Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2.
The entertaining 24-year-old will next face Alex de Minaur for a place in the finals. De Minaur took out an erratic Daniil Medvedev 7-6(7), 7-5 during the day session.
Elsewhere, the night session was highlighted by No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz being upset by No. 12 seed Tommy Paul, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Paul will next face either No. 7 seed Jannik Sinner or Frenchman Gael Monfils.
Action in Montreal saw Belinda Bencic oust Petra Kvitova and No. 15 seed Liudmila Samsonova upset No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in three sets.
Jessica Pegula dismissed good friend and fellow American Coco Gauff for a place in the semifinals.
Pegula will next face top seed Iga Swiatek, who dismissed Danielle Collins on in three sets.
Later in the day, No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina goes up against No. 10 Daria Kasatkina and Bencic will return to take on No. 15 seed Liudmila Samsonova.
Saturday’s schedule of play in Toronto and Montreal will highlight all semifinal matches.
