Paul Reaches Italian Open Semifinals
Thursday’s action at the Italian Open in Rome, Italy featured flamboyant American Tommy Paul reaching the semifinals, defeating No. 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
Needing two hours and 44 minutes to prevail, Paul hit three aces, won 54 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on seven occasions.
Improving to 2-1 against Hurkacz in lifetime meetings, Paul will next face either No. 6 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or No. 21 Nicolas Jarry.
Hurkacz had easily defeated 10-time former winner Rafael Nadal in the third-round.
Swiatek Defeats Gauff to Reach Finals
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek continued her stronghold on the women’s game on Thursday, ousting reigning US Open winner Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3.
Recently claiming the Madrid Open crown over Aryna Sabalenka, Swiatek will be looking to enter the French Open next week in perfect form.
Friday’s schedule of play in Rome will be highlighted by the men’s semifinals. No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev will face tournament upstart Alejandro Tabilo for a place in Sunday’s final.
