Opelka Wins First Masters Series Match in 3 Years at 2025 Miami Open
Thursday’s ATP Tour and WTA Results
Thursday’s action at the Miami Open presented by Itau featured American Reilly Opelka advancing to the second round, defeating compatriot Christopher Eubanks 6-3, 7-6(4).
Improving to 4-0 against Eubanks in lifetime meetings, Opelka hit 15 aces, 32 winners, won 93 percent of his first serve points and broke serve on one occasions
Currently ranked No. 114 on the season, Opelka improved to 9-5 on the year and will next face No. 11 seed Holger Rune for a place in round three. The American also picked up his first Masters 1000 victory in the past three seasons.
Rune recently made the finals of the BNP Paribas Open, losing to Jack Draper in straight sets.
Other winners on the day in Miami saw Thiago Agustin Tirante, Zizou Bergs, and Jacob Fearnley all reach the second round.
Still to come on Thursday, Brazilian star Joao Fonesca will take on Learner Tien, and Hugo Gaston will face Yoshihito Nishioka.
Friday’s schedule in South Florida will see six-time former winner Novak Djokovic in action. The Serb is currently on a three-match losing streak. Australian Nick Krygios will also be featured. The former Wimbledon finalist defeated Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match.
Zheng Flies into Round Three
Reigning Olympic Gold medal winner Qinwen Zheng raced into the third round in Miami on Thursday, defeating American Laura Davis 6-1, 7-5.
Needing one hour and 17 minutes to advance, Zheng slammed 12 aces, won 81 percent of her second serve points and broke her opponent on four occasions.
Looking to win her six career title in Miami, Zheng will next face Taylor Townsend or No. 19 seed Yulia Putintseva for a place in round four.
Other players to advance on the day saw No. 6 seed Jasmine Paolini and Elena-Gabriela Ruse reached round three.
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka, and No. 3 seed Coco Gauff will play their second-round matches later today.
Friday’s order of play in South Florida will be highlighted by No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek and No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula.
