Britain’s top player Cameron Norrie reached the fourth-round of the US Open on Saturday, defeating young Dane Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1.
Needing two hours and 12 minutes to advance, Norrie will next face either No. 9 seed Andrey Rublev or No. 19 seed Denis Shapovalov for a place in the quarterfinals.
Norrie, who made the semifinals of Wimbledon this year, also won the BNP Paribas Open during the fall in 2021.
Still to come on Saturday, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal will take an 18-match winning streak against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Spanish upstart and No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz will take on unorthodox American Jenson Brooksby.
Elsewhere, No. 8 seed Jessica Pegula dismissed Yue Yuan 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-0, and No. 21 seed Petra Kvitova ousted No. 9 seed Garbine Muguruza 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(10).
Two-time former Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka advanced to the fourth round on Louis Armstrong Stadium with a comprehensive victory over Petra Martic, 6-3, 6-0. The No. 26 seed will next face either No. 13 seed Belinda Bencic or No. 22 seed Karolina Pliskova.
Tonight’s night session will feature No. 19 seed Danielle Collins vs. Alize Cornet.
Sunday’s action at Flushing Meadows will be highlighted by No. 1 seed Daniil Medvedev vs. No. 23 seed Nick Kyrgios and No. seed Coco Gauff vs. Shuai Zhang
