Roland Garros—Paris, France
Top seed Rafael Nadal cemented himself as the greatest clay-court player ever on Sunday in Paris, France, winning his record 11th title at Roland Garros with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 7 seed Dominic Thiem.
In a match that lasted two hours and 42 minutes, Nadal broke out to a 2-0 lead before Thiem responded right away. With tough baseline rallies dominating the first set, Nadal broke serve again in the 10th game to take a one set lead. Firmly establishing his position with a lead in hand, Nadal won 82 percent of his first serve points, broke serve on five occasions and hit 26 winners to 24 unforced errors.
Thiem, who was playing in his first Grand Slam final, defeated No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev earlier in the event. The Austrian had also defeated Nadal at the Madrid Open earlier in the year.
Nadal’s victory also added to his Major total which now stands at 17. He’s currently three behind all-time leader Roger Federer, who has 20 Majors.
Nadal will rest for a week before warming up for the Wimbledon Championships at the Queens Club event in London, England next week.
