First-round results:
Monday’s opening round action at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada saw No. 16 seed Lorzeno Musetti easily dismiss Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-1.
The Italian will next face Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
In other action, Herbert Hurkacz, Matteo Berrettini, Francisco Cerundolo, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Jiri Lehecka all reached the second round of the event.
Under the lights, former World No. 3 and hometown favourite Milos Raonic dispatched No. 10 seed Frances Tiafoe
Over in Montreal, Jasmine Paolini upset Donna Vekic 7-6(3), 6-2. Paolini will next face Madison Keys in the second round. The American defeated Venus Williams 6-2, 7-5.
Other results on the day included No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic, No. 16 seed Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens, Karolina Pliskova and Marie Bouzkova marching into the round of 32.
Tuesday’s action in Montreal and Toronto will feature Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Elena Rybakina, Bianca Andresscu and Leylah Fernandez.
