MIAMI (www.miamiopen.com) – For the first time in the history of the Miami Open presented by Itaú, an event that sets the standard for glamour in international tennis, both the men’s and women’s champion will each earn prize money in excess of $1 million.

In addition to walking home with the Butch Buchholz Championship Trophy, this year’s singles champions will receive precisely $1,028,300. This is an increase of more than $100,000 from last year’s sum that saw the champions walk home with slightly more than $900,000.

With a total financial commitment exceeding $13.8 million, up from $12.4 million a year ago, this year’s financial breakdown includes increases for all finishers. Notably, semifinalists and finalists will top $250,000 and $500,000, respectively, in winnings.

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams won the singles titles in 2015. Both are currently ranked No. 1 in the world and are returning in 2016 to defend their crowns. They will have stiff competition for the coveted seven-figure prize, as the 76 top ranked men and 72 of the 73 top ranked women in the world have entered this year’s draw including Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams.

The action will begin on March 21 at the Crandon Tennis Center in Key Biscayne. The two-week event will culminate with a pair of million-dollar prizes handed out, as the women’s singles champion will be crowned on April 2 and the men’s on April 3.

With ticket packages starting at $136 and individual sessions starting at just $31, the Miami Open will be the place-to-be in Miami. Tickets are on sale now, for more information go to www.miamiopen.com or call the Miami Open ticket office at 305-442-3367.
