Former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev captured his first-ever Miami Open title on Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida, defeating Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-3.

Needing one hour and 34 minutes to seal his victory, Medvedev struck 37 winners, hit nine aces and broke the serve of his Italian opponent on four occasions.

Improving to 6-0 in lifetime meetings versus Sinner, Medvedev has been on an incredible run of form as of late. Reaching his fifth straight final in as many events, the 27-year-old now has four titles on the season.

He recently also made the finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

Sinner, who reach the finals in Miami in 2021, dismissed Alcaraz in a tough semifinal encounter on Friday evening. The match lasted three hours.

Medvedev will move up to No. 4 in world on Monday, while Sinner will improve to No. 9 in the rankings.

The ATP Tour and WTA circuits will now shift their attentions to the clay-courts of Europe.

Six weeks of action will culminate with the French Open, which will be held from Sunday May 28 to Sunday June 11, 2023 in Paris, France. The French Open is the year’s second Grand Slam event.
