Former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev breezed into the third round of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday, defeating Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-2.
Playing on his favourite surface, Medvedev will next face No. 16 seed Alexander Zverev.
Zverev recorded a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Yoshihito Nishioka.
Elsewhere, recent National Bank Open winner Jannik Sinner was dismissed by Dusan Lajovic, and two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud lost to Max Purcell, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul thrilled the hometown fans by advancing in straight sets over their lower ranked opponents.
On the women’s side, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek steamrolled Danielle Collins and Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova dismissed Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2.
Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula, No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari and No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina all advanced to the round of 16.
Still to come on Wednesday in Mason, Ohio, world No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 6 seed Coco Gauff will be in action.
