Roland Garros—Paris, France
Thursday’s schedule of play at the year’s second Major in Paris saw No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev breeze into the third round. The reigning US Open winner ousted Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Medvedev, who is only playing in his second clay-court event of the season, will face Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. Kecmanovic has been in wonderful form this year, highlighted by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Elsewhere, No. 8 seed Casper Ruud, No. 12 seed Hubert Hurkacz and No. 20 seed Marin Cilic were all victorious. No. 22 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili and No. 24 seed Frances Tiafoe weren’t as lucky, losing to Mackenzie McDonald and David Goffin, respectfully.
On the women’s side, top seed Iga Swiatek won her 30th straight match in impressive fashion over Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2, while No. 7 seed Aryna Sabalenka and No. 22 seed Madison Keys also moved on. No. 9 seed Danielle Collins and No. 19 seed Simona Halep weren’t as lucky, losing to Shelby Rogers and Qinwen Zheng, respectfully.
Friday’s action at Roland Garros will feature Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. To no one’s surprise, Djokovic is listed as +175 favourite to win the Men’s Singles Title. The feat would be his third victory at the French Open and 21st career Major overall. There are a number of sportsbooks now online in Ontario, meaning Canadian fans who want to get their bets in before the end of the tournament should do so now. Djokovic’s odds are very good and he’s a strong contender as mentioned for the title.
Other tournament contenders Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz will also be in action on Day 6.
Ladies play on Friday will be highlighted by Amanda Anisamova, Belinda Bencic, Angie Kerber, Coco Gauff and Victoria Azarenka.
