Italian Open 2026 Preview: Zverev, Djokovic and Osaka Headline Friday Action in Romeh

The second round of the Italian Open takes center stage on Friday, May 8, with several blockbuster matches set to unfold on the clay courts of the Foro Italico. Former champions, rising stars, and Grand Slam winners will all be in action as the road to French Open intensifies.

Among the headline matchups are Alexander Zverev against fellow German Daniel Altmaier, Novak Djokovic facing Croatian teenager Dino Prizmic, and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka taking on Germany’s Eva Lys.

Zverev vs. Altmaier: German Clash on Roman Clay

Alexander Zverev arrives in Rome once again as one of the tournament favorites. The world No. 4 has traditionally thrived on clay, using his heavy topspin backhand and elite movement to dominate long rallies. After a strong spring campaign that included deep runs in Monte Carlo and Madrid, Zverev appears to be peaking at the right moment ahead of Paris.

Standing across the net will be compatriot Daniel Altmaier, one of the more dangerous floaters on the ATP Tour. Altmaier’s grinding baseline style and comfort on slower surfaces make him a tricky early-round opponent. His ability to extend rallies and redirect pace could frustrate Zverev if the match becomes physical.

The head-to-head advantage favors Zverev, whose superior serve and experience in Masters 1000 events should ultimately prove decisive. However, Altmaier has produced notable clay-court upsets in the past and will look to exploit any lapses in concentration.

Key Match Factors

  • Zverev’s first-serve percentage
  • Altmaier’s ability to prolong rallies
  • Backhand exchanges on slower clay conditions
  • Physical endurance in extended baseline battles

Prediction

Zverev in straight sets, though several games could go deep if Altmaier settles into rhythm early.

Djokovic vs. Prizmic: Rome Crowd Awaits Djokovic Return

All eyes will be on Novak Djokovic as the 24-time Grand Slam champion begins his latest Rome campaign against rising Croatian talent Dino Prizmic.

Djokovic continues to use the clay swing as preparation for Roland Garros, where he remains one of the sport’s ultimate competitors. Even with younger challengers pushing through the ATP ranks, the Serbian legend’s tactical precision and defensive elasticity remain unmatched on big stages.

Prizmic, meanwhile, represents the next generation of Croatian tennis. The teenager has steadily climbed the rankings thanks to his fearless shot-making and strong movement. Facing Djokovic in Rome will be the biggest match of his young career.

The challenge for Prizmic is sustaining aggressive tennis without leaking errors. Djokovic excels at absorbing pace, exposing impatience, and turning defensive positions into offensive opportunities.

What to Watch

  • Djokovic’s return game against Prizmic’s serve
  • Long crosscourt exchanges
  • Prizmic’s composure under pressure
  • Djokovic’s movement and physical sharpness

Prediction

Djokovic in comfortable fashion, with Prizmic likely producing flashes of brilliance but struggling to maintain consistency over two sets.

Osaka vs. Eva Lys: Osaka Searching for Clay Momentum

Naomi Osaka continues her clay-court evolution when she meets Eva Lys in one of Friday’s intriguing WTA contests.

Osaka’s explosive serve and first-strike power make her dangerous on any surface, but clay has historically presented unique challenges for the former world No. 1. Patience, movement, and point construction become increasingly important in Rome’s slower conditions.

Eva Lys has quietly emerged as a dangerous competitor capable of extending rallies and forcing opponents into uncomfortable patterns. The German’s defensive skills and counterpunching could test Osaka’s consistency from the baseline.

For Osaka, controlling the center of the court and shortening points will be essential. If she serves efficiently and dictates with her forehand, she should be able to keep Lys on defense.

Tactical Outlook

  • Osaka’s first-strike tennis vs. Lys’ counterpunching
  • Rally tolerance on clay
  • Serve effectiveness under pressure
  • Osaka’s forehand depth and court positioning

Prediction

Osaka in two competitive sets, provided she maintains a high first-serve percentage.

Friday Schedule Outlook at the Italian Open

Friday’s schedule at the Italian Open offers a blend of established champions and emerging stars. With the clay-court season entering its decisive stretch before Roland Garros, every match carries added significance.

Players are not only chasing ranking points and momentum, but also valuable match toughness on one of the sport’s most demanding surfaces. Rome traditionally provides one of the clearest indicators of form heading into Paris, making Friday’s lineup particularly compelling for tennis fans worldwide.

Whether it’s Djokovic continuing his pursuit of history, Zverev sharpening his title credentials, or Osaka building confidence on clay, the Foro Italico promises another memorable day of elite tennis.
