Isner Captures Miami Open Title Over Zverev

Miami Open presented by Itaú—Miami, FL, U.S.A.

American John Isner captured the biggest title of his career on Sunday in Key Biscayne, Florida, defeating No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4. Needing two hours and 30 minutes to upend his younger opponent, Isner struck 18 aces, while winning 82 percent of his first serve points. Breaking serve on two occasions, the 32-year-old also won his first Masters 1000 title and the fourteenth title of his career.

Zverev, who was in search of his third career Masters 1000 crown, lost his serve in the ninth game of the second set and never recovered. Even though the powerful German was able to win a very high first serve percentage (72) and a very respectable second serve percentage (61), his delivery continued to come under attack at the hands of his aggressive opponent.

Playing the last professional singles match at Crandon Park, Isner also become the first American men’s winner since Andy Roddick in 2010. The Miami Open will look to relocate its venue in 2019 to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The current location in Key Biscayne housed the event for 30 years.
