Predictions for US Open 2024

Italian Open Schedule.

The US Open in tennis traditionally marks the culmination of the season, serving as the final pinnacle of the Grand Slam calendar year. Although the start of the US Open 2024 is still a few months away, many experts and fans are already making preliminary predictions and naming potential favorites. Last year’s champions and leading contenders among men in 2024

The US Open in tennis, scheduled to take place from August 26 to September 8 in New York, traditionally concludes the Grand Slam tournaments’ season. Last year, the main triumphants of the US Open were Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff. Djokovic, the Serbian, secured his 24th major in New York, thereby setting the long-awaited record for the most Grand Slam titles in a career, previously held by the legendary Margaret Court.

It remains uncertain how the remainder of the season will unfold for Djokovic, and whether he will achieve his dream of Olympic gold in Paris in August. However, it seems evident that at the US Open, he will either attempt to cap another triumphant year logically or strive to salvage an unsuccessful season with the last major of the year. Undoubtedly, Djokovic will aim to defend his championship title in New York and claim his fifth US Open trophy. However, unexpected twists often occur in the final major of the season.

Carlos Alcaraz secured his first significant victory precisely at the US Open in 2022. The young Spaniard excels on hard courts and knows how to inspire the lively New York audience. Daniil Medvedev shocked the tennis world in 2021 by defeating Djokovic in the decisive match. In the last season, the Russian lost to the Serbian in the US Open final, but fans adore him for his fighting spirit and charismatic post-match interviews.

Jannik Sinner reached the quarterfinals in 2022 before losing in a memorable night match to Alcaraz. However, as demonstrated at the Australian Open and the end of the 2023 season, the Italian has evolved into one of the best hard court players. In 2023, 21-year-old American Ben Shelton made a stellar breakthrough, reaching the US Open semifinals. He proved that he could be the long-awaited American player to break the drought in the country’s major titles. We do not claim that it will happen in New York in 2024, but we do not rule out the possibility. And wouldn’t that be great?

Last year’s champions and leading contenders among women in 2024

The main contenders for victory in the women’s singles at the US Open 2024 will be Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, and Mirra Andreeva.

After a triumphant summer in 2023, where she won tournaments in Washington and Cincinnati, defending champion Gauff finally fulfilled her dream – winning the US Open at home. In the 2024 season, Coco confirmed that last year’s success was not a fluke – she won the title in Auckland and reached the semifinals in Melbourne. The American will strive to become the first back-to-back US Open champion since Serena Williams (2012-2014), and early signs indicate that this is entirely possible.

Aryna Sabalenka will also attempt to continue her dominance on hard courts and secure another significant victory on this surface. In 2023, she lost to Gauff in the US Open final but avenged the defeat in the Australian Open semifinals.

Iga Swiatek won her first and so far only major outside Paris at the US Open in 2022. In 2023, the Polish tennis player also won the final of the prestigious WTA tournament on hard courts. Last season, Swiatek lost in the fourth round in New York but admitted that the pressure to defend the title for the sake of maintaining her top-ranking position sometimes became an overwhelming burden. If this pressure is lifted, Swiatek can return to the level of 2022.

Thanks to the unpredictability of the US Open, Naomi Osaka and the young Mirra Andreeva could also enter the title race. Osaka, the champion in 2018 and 2020, only returned to the court this month after a 15-month hiatus. Although she lost in the first round of the Australian Open, the Japanese player demonstrated promising gameplay and her signature form. It’s hard to believe that Osaka won’t be able to return to the top level after almost a full season of competitive practice. Like no one else, she knows the way to victory in New York. As for 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva, since bursting onto the tennis scene last year, she has impressed with her gameplay and determination. In 2024, Andreeva has already reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. The US Open often sees unexpected champions who seemingly came out of nowhere (see Emma Raducanu). With another season of invaluable experience, Andreeva seems more than capable of adding her name to that list.
