Top seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev made winning starts to their campaigns at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Saturday.
First up, Medvedev struck 60 winners in ousting Cristian Garin 6-3, 6-3. Medvedev will next face Sebastian Korda for a place in the fourth round.
Next up, top seed Alcaraz needed one hour and 42 minutes to defeat Gregoire Barrere 6-2, 7-5. The Spaniard will take on Daniel Evans or Mikhail Kukushkin for a spot in the sweet 16.
Other matches on the day saw No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 12 seed Tommy Paul and No. 22 seed Nicolas Jarry all advancing to the next round. No. 21 seed Jan-Lennard Struff wasn’t as lucky, losing in three sets to Matteo Arnaldi.
Sunday’s schedule of play in Shanghai will be highlighted by Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev and Frances Tiafoe.
