Sunday’s action at Roland Garros featured top seed Novak Djokovic and No. 5 seed Rafael Nadal setting up a mouth-watering quarterfinal encounter after both super-stars won their respective fourth round matches.
First up, Djokovic needed all of his guile and patience and get by the ever-steady Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Djokovic, who was playing on Court Suzanne Lenglen, encountered a rowdy crowd on his way to victory.
Later in the day, 13-time winner Nadal had a much more difficult time prevailing as he needed four hours and 21 minutes to dismiss strong Canadian Felix Auger-Ailassime.
Nadal and Djokovic will be playing for the 59th time in their illustrious careers on Tuesday. The Serb great leads Nadal 30-28 in their career head-to-head meetings.
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev ousted Bernabe Zapata Miralles in three sets and inform Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz dismissed Karen Khachanov in straight sets in the night cap.
The ladies draw featured US Open finalist and No. 17 seed Leylah Fernandez needing three sets to advance over American Amanda Anisamova, while Martina Trevisan defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6(12), 7-5. Fernandez won by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The last two women’s round of 16 matches on the day saw No. 18 seed Coco Gauff dismiss No. 31 seed Elise Mertens and former US Open winner and Roland Garros finalist Sloane Stephens advanced past Jil Teichmann 6-2, 6-0.
Monday’s action in Paris will feature women’s top seed Iga Swiatek, No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev, American Madison Keys and No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
