Young Dane Holger Rune defeated six-time former winner Novak Djokovic 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on Wednesday at the BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy.
Needing two hours and 19 minutes to seal his victory, Rune hit three aces, struck 27 winners and broke serve on five occasions. Winning two matches in a row against the legendary Serb, Rune will next face either Casper Ruud or Francisco Cerundolo.
Other matches on the day will include Paula Badosa taking on Jelena Ostapenko and top seed Iga Swiatek facing No. 7 seed Elena Rybakina.
Thursday’s action in Rome will feature continued quarterfinal matches on the men’s and women’s draws.
