Goffin, Kotov and Hijikata Reach Winston-Salem Quarterfinals
Wednesday’s action at the Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina, U.S.A. featuring the remainder of the round of 16 matches.
First up, Frenchman Arther Rinderknech was ousted by former top 10 player David Goffin, 6-3, 6-3.
Using his first serve to great effect, Goffin dropped two aces, won 84 percent of his first serve points and broke the serve of his French opponent on three occasions.
Currently ranked No. 84 in the world, Goffin will next face Rinky Hijikata for a place in the semifinals.
The Australian star defeated Borna Coric 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Other results on the day featured No. 15 seed Pavel Kotov dismissing lucky loser Zachary Svajda 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and No. 10 seed Lorenzo Sonego advancing via a walkover against Juncheng Shang.
The Winston-Salem Open is the final ATP Tour event before the start of the main draw next week at the US Open.
The US Open is the year’s final Grand Slam and was won in 2023 in by Novak Djokovic. American Coco Gauff captured the women’s title.
