No. 14 seed Garbine Muguruza won her first Wimbledon title on Saturday in London, England, defeating No. 10 seed Venus Williams 7-5, 6-0. In a match that lasted one hour and 17 minutes, Muguruza converted on a crucial break of serve in the 11th game of the first set and never looked back. After capturing the high quality, hard-hitting first set, Muguruza steamrolled through the second set, losing only 12 points. Striking 14 winners to 11 unforced errors, Muguruza captured her second grand slam title and first since winning Roland Garros in 2016. The 24-year-old Geneva resident also made the final of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, losing to Serena Williams.
Venus Williams, who has enjoyed a tremendous year on Tour, lost her second Grand Slam final of 2017. The 37-year-old also dropped a straight set encounter to her sister Serena at the Australian Open in January.
