Elsewhere, Toronto semifinalist Tommy Paul dismissed Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets, defending champion Borna Coric dispatched Sebastian Korda in one hour and 36 minutes, and three-time Major winner Stan Wawrinka outlasted Brandon Nakashima in three sets.
Still to come on Tuesday, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz will play his first match of the event under the lights and Felix Auger-Aliassme will take on Adrian Mannarino.
On the women’s side, Daria Kasatkina and Jelena Ostapenko were both victorious, while former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was defeated by Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-4.
Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur needed all of her court-craft to edge past Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(2).
