Thursday’s action at the Rolex Shanghai Masters saw fiery Frenchman Arthur Fils advance to the second round of the event, defeating Pavel Kotov 6-1, 6-4.
Fils will next face No. 24 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Elsewhere, Matteo Arnaldi, Diego Schwartzman, and Botic van de Zandschulp all advanced to round two.
Aslan Karatsev and Laslo Djere weren’t as fortunate, dropping first round matches to Quentin Halys and Rinky Hijikata, respectfully.
Friday’s schedule in Shanghai will feature No. 3 see Holger Rune, No. 8 seed Casper Ruud, No. 9 Alexander Zverev, No. 11 Ales de Minaur and No. 14 Felix Auger-Aliassime.
