Cincinnati, Ohio—World No. 3 Roger Federer has withdrawn from this week’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio with a back injury. Federer sustained the injury in a losing effort to Alexander Zverev in the Rogers Cup final on Sunday.
Federer’s absence from Cincinnati means that Rafael Nadal will retake the No. 1 ranking on Monday. The Spaniard has had a resurgent season, led by a 15th Major title at the French Open. Nadal was also helped by the fact that current world No. 1 Andy Murray is also skipping the event with a hip injury.
