No. 3 seed Roger Federer won his record eighth Wimbledon title on Sunday after he defeated No. 7 seed Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. In a match that lasted one hour and 41 minutes, Federer grabbed a break of serve lead at 3-2 and never looked back. Striking eight aces, winning 81 percent of his first serve points and 71 percent of his second serve points, Federer broke serve on five occasions and improved to 7-1 against Cilic in lifetime meetings.
Cilic, who appeared to be carrying a left foot injury into the match, became quite emotional toward the end of the first set and never recovered. Defeating Gilles Muller and Sam Querrey en-route to the finals, Cilic had previously won the US Open in 2014, dismissing Federer in the semifinals.
Federer’s achievements in the sport continue to grow. The Swiss legend now has 19 Major crowns, 93 career titles and now has a realistic chance of finishing world No. 1 by the end of the year.
Federer is next slated to see action at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
