Engel Captures First Career Win at Almaty Open; Badosa Advances in Ningbo
German upstart Justin Engel captured his first-career ATP Tour victory on Monday in Almaty, Kazakhstan, defeating Coleman Wong from Hong Kong 7-5, 6-4.
In a match that lasted one hour and 34 minutes, Engel hit five aces, won 71 percent of his first serve points and broke serve of three occasions.
The 17-year-old will next face No. 4 seed Francisco Cerundolo for a place in the in the quarterfinals.
Other main-draw winners on the day included Maximilian Marterer ousting Damir Dzumhur 7-5, 6-4.
American Frances Tiafoe is the top seed at the event.
European Open Underway
Day 1 at the European Open in Antwerp, Belgium saw Roberto Carballes Baena take out lefty German Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 6-0.
Carballes Baena will next face top seeded Australian Alex de Minaur for a place in the quarterfinals.

Ningbo Open—China
No. 8 seed Paula Badosa continued her comeback season in style on Monday, defeating Diana Shnaider 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Badosa, who is currently ranked No. 15 in the world, has won one singles title on the year and just short of two million in prize money. The Spaniard will next face Xiyu Wang, who dismissed Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 6-0.
Other winners on the day featured Mirra Andreeva, Tamara Korpatsch and Yulia Putintseva all advancing to the second round. The tournament’s top seed is Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil.
Kinoshita Group Japan Open Results
Opening day action at the Japan Open in Osaka was highlighted by No. 8 seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Aoi Ito, Mccartney Kessler, Lucia Bronzetti, Clara Tauson and Suzan Lamens all advancing to the second round.
Lamens upset No. 6 seed Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-2.
