It has been another excellent year for Novak Djokovic on the ATP Tour. Not only has the Serbian jumped back to the top spot in the ATP rankings, but he has been successful in three of the four Grand Slam singles events, with wins in the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.

Djokovic will be hoping there is one more major prize left in the season at the ATP Finals in Turin. He is a six-time winner of the tournament and victory in 2023 would give him the record outright for the most titles.

Defending Champion on Course to Be the Number One Seed

His three Grand Slam title successes this year means Djokovic is projected to be the number one seed for the ATP Finals in November. He is one of three players already qualified for the event in Italy.

The 36-year-old has dominated the hard courts over the last 12 months. He is expected to do the same in 2024, as he is the 11/10 favourite in the Betfair tennis odds for the US Open where he will be defending his crown at Flushing Meadows in New York.

When the ATP Finals was held in London, Djokovic won the tournament in four consecutive years between 2012 and 2015.

His victory last November was his first success in Turin, in what was only the second time the event had been held in the Italian city.

Djokovic has played just once since he beat Daniil Medvedev in the final of the 2023 US Open. He featured in Serbia’s World Group Davis Cup tie against Spain, helping his country to book their spot in the quarter finals of the team competition. After what has been a long year, the world number one has afforded himself some rest ahead of the final tournament on the ATP calendar in Turin.

Medvedev Expected to Be One of Players Challenging Djokovic

Former winner Medvedev has also booked his spot in the 2023 ATP Finals. He won this tournament in 2020, beating Dominic Thiem for the trophy, as the BBC reported. 12 months later, he finished runner-up, after Alexander Zverev got the better of him
in the final.

Medvedev has reached eight ATP Tour finals in 2023, winning five trophies, including the Miami Open and Italian Open, two Masters 1000 events. He became just the third player in history behind Andre Agassi and Djokovic to win those two tournaments in the same season.

The Russian is third in the ATP rankings for the Race To Turin. He is expected to play in the Shanghai Masters in what will be the final tournament before the top eight players travel to Turin.

American Duo on Fringes of Qualification

American pair Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul are just on the fringes of qualification for the ATP Finals, so will need to perform well in Shanghai to jump into the top eight in the standings. With 1000 points available to the winner in Shanghai, they are among several players who still are in the hunt to book their spot in the final ATP finale event.

While beating Djokovic would be no easy task for these younger players, the opportunity to play in the ATP finals would no doubt fire up their hunger to prove themselves.

Fritz has won three tournaments in 2023, including the Atlanta Open, while Paul is a three-time runner-up in what has been a consistent year on the tour.

The 2023 ATP Finals takes place between 12-19 November, and it will be the 54th edition of the prestigious tennis event.
