Rogers Cup
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 5 seed Simona Halep won titles in Toronto and Montreal at the Rogers Cup on Sunday, respectively. For Djokovic, his fourth title in Canada saw him break his Japanese opponent Kei Nishikori on three occasions to win his 10th match in 12 encounters, 6-3, 7-5. Needing one hour and 22 minutes to prevail, Djokovic struck nine aces and won 82 percent of his first serve points. As a result of his efforts, Djokovic took home his 30th Masters 1000 title and will now shift his attention to the Rio Olympics as he aims for a Gold medal.
Nishikori, who was aiming to win his first ever Masters 1000 title, fell to 40-12 on the season.
Over in Montreal, Halep won her third title of the year after defeating Madison Keys 7-6(2), 6-3. In a match that featured nine total breaks of serve, the first set proved to be crucial as Halep cruised in set two. Using her guile to fend off the power of Keys, Halep won 53 percent of the points when returning her opponent’s second serve.
Defeating the likes of Angie Kerber and Svetlana Kuznetsova en-route to the finals, Halep captured her biggest title of 2016 since winning in Madrid earlier this year. The Romanian also captured the title in Bucharest prior to winning in Montreal. She is currently on a 10 match winning streak.
