Australian Open—Melbourne, Australia
Defending champion Rafael Nadal was ousted in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday, losing to American Mackenzie McDonald, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
Visibly hampered by what was later known to be a hip injury, Nadal was seen hobbling to the finishing line during the later stages of the two hours and 32 minute contest.
Winning the title last year, Nadal will now drop to at least No. 6 in the world when the latest rankings are released. Next scheduled to play in Dubai next month, the Spaniard’s future is currently unknown.
The 22-time Major winner will turn 37 later this Spring.
Elsewhere, No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime, No. 7 Daniil Medvedev, No. 15 Jannik Sinner, No. 16 Frances Tiafoe, No. 18 Karen Khachanov and No. 20 Denis Shapovalov all advanced to the third round.
The only other men’s seed to lose on the day was No. 32 Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. He was sent packing by Tallon Griekspoor.
In women’s action, No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek continued to roll at the event, dispatching
Camila Osorio 6-2, 6-3. She will next face Cristina Bucsa, who defeated former US Open winner Bianca Andresscu 2-6, 7-6(9), 6-4.
