Thursday’s action at the National Bank Open saw inform Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeat No. 3 Casper Ruud 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4) to reach the quarterfinals.
Davidovich Fokina will next face Mackenzie McDonald, who dashed the hopes of hometown favourite Milos Raonic 6-3, 6-3.
Later in the day, top seed Carlos Alcaraz needed a third set tiebreaker to overcome No. 15 seed Hubert Hurkacz, 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(3).
Alcaraz will next face Tommy Paul, who dismissed fellow American Marcus Giron 6-3, 6-2.
Other matches on the day saw Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, Alex de Minaur and Gael Monfils all reaching the final eight.
At the Montreal event, American Jessica Pegula continued her impressive year by dispatching Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-0.
Top seed Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals after she ousted Karolína Muchova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The Pole will next face Danielle Collins, who dispatched Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-2, 6-3.
Other results on the day included No. 3 seed Elena Rybakina, No. 6 seed Coco Gauff and No. 10 Daria Kasatkina all advancing to the quarterfinals.
Friday’s schedule of play will include all the men’s and women’s quarterfinal matches.
