Carreno Busta Wins Chengdu Title; de Minaur Captures Zhuhai Crown

AFP

Chengdu Open—Chengdu, China

Pablo Carreno Busta won his fourth career on Sunday in Chengdu, China, defeating Russian Alexander Bublik 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(3). Needing two hours and five minutes to close out the entertaining encounter, Carreno Busta overcame 31 aces by his opponent, while breaking serve on one occasion. Improving to 2-0 against Bublik in lifetime meetings, Carreno Busta also defeated Benoit Paire and Denis Shapovalov earlier in the event.

Bublik, who was looking for his first career title, fell to 0-2 in career finals after losing in the championship round of Newport, R.I. earlier this year.

No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur captured his third title of the year on Sunday in Zhuhai, China, upending Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6(4), 6-4. Winning a competitive first set that lasted well over one hour, de Minaur elevated his game in set two to close out the match in straight sets. Never facing a break point against his serve, de Minaur created 13 break point opportunities in the match.

Winning titles in Sydney, Australia and Atlanta, Georgia earlier this year, de Minaur will likely hit No. 24 in the rankings on Monday. He’s currently ranked No. 31 in the world.

Mannarino, who was looking for his second career title, fell to 1-7 in championship matches. The 31-year-old won his maiden title in s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands in June.
