Montreal, April 5, 2014 – Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) was two games away from reaching her second WTA final, but couldn’t close the deal on Saturday at the Family Circle Cup, a WTA Premier event in Charleston, South Carolina.
The 20-year-old Canadian fell 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 to former world no. 9 Andrea Petkovic in the semifinals, her third loss in as many meetings against the Gernan. Bouchard played at a very high level for a set and a half and appeared on her way to a comfortable victory. Petkovic raised her level just in time to force a third set. Playing her third straight three set match, Bouchard took a 4-2 lead in the final frame and was one point away from being ahead 5-2. Again, Petkovic managed to turn the match in her favour to get a well-earned triumph in just over 2 hours.
Bouchard was playing her second semifinal of the season. After reaching the quarter-finals on the green clay in Charleston last year, she did one better in 2014 thanks to wins over Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic.
Bouchard will next head to Quebec City to lead Canada in their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group I play-off against Slovakia on April 19 and 20.
